What is a Fascia board?image of a fascia board and barge board diagram

A fascia board protects the timber of your roof truss from water. Usually rain water runs from the roof into the gutter but some of the water will splash towards the house and damage the roof timber. The Fascia board prevents this damage.

Why are Fascia Boards important?

Fascia boards not only look nice, these boards also provide protection for your roof trusses. Timber is, of course, waterproof but long term exposure to rain water will slowly damage the wood. Roof trusses are quite hard to reach and this makes it difficult to do regular wood treatment on the trusses. As a result most home owners rely on Fascia Boards and Barge Boards to protect the timber from damage.

Why should I replace Fascia Boards?

You don't have to replace Fascia Boards but by keeping your Fascia Boards and Barge Boards in good condition you will dramatically prolong the life of your roof trusses. Fascia Boards are much cheaper and easier to replace than roof trusses so in the long term you will save a considerable amount.

How do fascia boards get damaged?

The fact that facia boards are exposed to the elements will increase the chances of damage and speed up the general wear and tear type of damage that affects facia boards. Weather damage wether gradual or as the result of a weather anomaly is a common reason behind fascia boards needing repair.

What type of damage can occur to facia boards

  • Peeling paint - usuallyas a result of exposure to extreme sunshine and rain
  • Exposure to rain or moisture which seeps below the protective paint can cause the facia to rot.
  • Unmanaged plant growth such as tree branches can grow and push against the facia board causing it to break
  • In South Africa snow and ice build up is rare but the resultant pressure can cause facia to crack and splinter.
  • Animals such as squirrels and rats can nest behind the facia and sometimes even use bits of the facia to build the nest.
  • Dry-rot can also occur.

What will the result of unrepaired fascia boards be?

  • Exposed roofbeams
  • Moisture will find its way past the damaged facia boards causing wood to rot.
  • Mold in the ceiling
  • Devaluation of your house as a result of the spoiled facade

Damage to the fascia could mean exposed beams, slipping tiles and drooping gutters, so keeping the fascia in good repair with undamaged fascia boards is important.

Barge boards

Barge boards are fitted on the shorts side or gable side of the house. The gable refers to the wall reaching a peak in order for the roofs pitch to be supported. Barge boards are used here to protect the beams and rafter ends which would normally be exposed and suffer elemental damage.

Barge boards protect the tiles of the roof from being blown off at the gable ends. This is of great benefit in high wind areas where tiles or occasionally lifted, exposing the roof beams and trusses to the elements.picture of a decorative bargeboard on the gable of the house

Barge boards are also becoming increasingly decorative and lend a finish to most homes, the condition of the barge boards can impact the look of a house and over time if they are not maintained the general appearance of the house will be affected causing it to appear of lower value.

We are able to fix barge boards and verge tiles. We also do gable repairs, leaving your home with a freshly built appearance.
